Toyota's Hydrogen Illuminations - the world's first film shoot powered by hydrogen, delivered by Hydrologiq

Replacing dirty diesel generators

This type of shoot typically would have requested two 100kVA gensets, running full time and producing 7 tonnes of CO2e (plus a huge amount of NOx and particulate emissions) over a 4-day period. Not the sort of pollution we want or should accept with clean-running alternatives available.

Talking of alternatives, Hydrologiq delivered a turnkey, modern, silent, no pollution solution running on green hydrogen. Delivery was a complete success with absolutely no issues. The production crew had all the clean power they would need, they got the shots, and we showed that hydrogen is absolutely the drop-in replacement for diesel generators.

Hydrogen generator film shoot and tube trailer
Hydrologiq engineers deployed two 100kVA fuel-cell generators, fuelled by a single hydrogen tube-trailer, and monitored the site with their in-house IoT remote monitoring solution.
EODev GEH2 V2 and V3 generators were deployed safely into a challenging inner-city setting.

Hydrogen powering film at scale

To quote Harry Ricardo, video technician on the shoot: "I couldn't see any reason why large productions couldn't be powered by hydrogen. Everything has been seamless from the off, nothing's happened differently to what we always do, which is only a good thing."

Hydrologiq are scaling the use of hydrogen for off-grid power. Powering this film showed it is entirely possible, a sentiment that Stuart Sanders, Toyota's UK Marketing Director, shares for the future of Toyota and hydrogen in general: "We talked about discussion is discussion, but execution is execution. And in delivering this - in doing something that is a first, and effectively making the impossible possible, we've created a film that showcases the transformation journey we've been on before and we're on again, but we've done it in a way that showcases the flexibility and impact of hydrogen in our society as we go forward."

Hydrologiq IoT monitoring kept an eye on fuel levels for the entire deployment.
