Hydrologiq recharges BEVs with hydrogen for Toyota at Cenex LCV

Vehicle electrification is a critical step towards achieving net zero for many industries. However, many charging installations are faced with grid connectivity issues and have to resort to using diesel generators to power their chargers

Hydrologiq’s own research demonstrates that charging a BEV using a diesel generator in fact emits twice as much CO2 as recharging it from a coal power station*.

Toyota GB, sharing the same vision of a zero-emission future, commissioned Hydrologiq to design and deploy a hydrogen generator-powered BEV charging system to power their vehicles during the Cenex LCV event. The generator chosen was an EODev GEH2 generator, which uses Toyota’s own fuel cell technology. Using the Hydrologiq hardware and software platform, we organised fuel/logistics and deployed the generator overnight to power the 7kW charger. Real-time IoT monitoring is instantly available through the platform to provide visibility on the performance of the system.

John Hunt, Senior Manager Hydrogen Transformation at Toyota (GB) said, “Our vehicles were powered by certified green hydrogen but it’s worth realising that EVERY other BEV and the entire site was powered from the electricity grid, the issue with this power is the carbon intensity of the grid at the time ranged from 181 g Kwh to 268g KWh so not carbon free. Ours was from zero carbon sources.”
